Who Should Attend
HR directors, managers, business partners, generalists, and employee relations professionals who need managers to address performance problems, apply standards consistently, and deliver on commitments—even when HR has no direct authority over them.
How You Will Benefit
Identify whether management inaction requires support, clearer expectations, or escalation.
Challenge avoidance with evidence and a clear business rationale.
Define what managers must own and where HR should assist.
Respond confidently when managers resist recommendations or transfer responsibility.
Secure specific commitments and evaluate whether meaningful action follows.
What You Will Cover
Learn how to address the management behavior that keeps employee problems unresolved. Examine why managers delay action, how HR can unintentionally assume their responsibilities, and what makes an accountability conversation produce a clear commitment.
Apply these principles to familiar situations: a manager who repeatedly postpones feedback, a leader who excuses inconsistent standards, and a supervisor who expects HR to handle every difficult conversation. Determine what to say, what action to request, and when further escalation becomes necessary.
Seminar Outline
Identify What Is Preventing Action
Assess whether unclear expectations, limited skill, competing priorities, or avoidance explain the delay. Choose an intervention that addresses the actual barrier.
Establish Ownership and Set Clear Expectations
Define the manager’s responsibility for conversations, decisions, and follow-through. Determine where HR support builds capability and where taking over allows the problem to continue.
Handle Resistance and Secure a Specific Commitment
Connect management inaction to lost time, rework, and team performance. Practice responding to objections and securing a clear action, owner, and deadline.
Evaluate Follow-Through and Decide When to Escalate
Assess completed actions against the commitment made. Decide when additional support is appropriate and when continued inaction requires involvement from the manager’s leader.
