Live online frontline manager training for organizations across Canada.

When Managers Cannot Handle the Difficult Moments

Most managers can manage when everything is going well. Their capability becomes much more consequential when it is not.

A strong employee is frustrated. Someone is not meeting expectations. A conversation needs to happen that nobody wants to have. The manager must decide whether to coach, correct, intervene, escalate, or give the employee more time.

These situations test more than knowledge of company policy. They require judgment.

When managers hesitate or make poor decisions, the cost moves through the organization. Problems continue longer than they should. HR becomes involved in matters managers should be able to handle. Senior leaders step in. Employees receive inconsistent treatment. Capable people begin wondering why problems around them are allowed to continue.

Frontline managers need to know what to do when management becomes difficult.

What Managers Will Learn

The program concentrates on the everyday decisions that determine whether managers actually succeed at leading people.

Participants learn how to establish expectations employees can understand and managers can reasonably enforce. They examine how to recognize performance problems early, determine what may be causing them, and decide how to respond before the situation becomes more difficult.

Managers also learn how to prepare for and conduct difficult conversations, respond constructively to mistakes and employee pushback, apply standards consistently, and make decisions when circumstances are uncertain.

The objective is not to give managers a script for every possible situation. It is to develop their ability to assess what is happening, decide what responsible management requires, and act with greater confidence.

Designed for Managers—and the Organizations That Depend on Them

This program is appropriate for aspiring managers preparing for their first management responsibility, recently promoted managers learning to lead people, and experienced managers who want to strengthen how they handle difficult management situations.

Organizations can also use the program to develop one or more managers whose responsibilities have grown beyond their previous management experience.

If you are responsible for developing managers, the question is not simply whether they understand their jobs. It is whether you can rely on them when an employee problem becomes difficult, uncomfortable, or consequential.

Participants may register themselves, or organizations may register managers they want to develop.

Practical Development Managers Can Apply at Work

The program is delivered through two live online training sessions of two hours each, providing four instructional hours.

Participants receive practical management decision tools and a leadership commitment plan designed to help transfer the learning into their everyday management responsibilities. Each session is recorded, giving registered participants 90-day access to revisit the material while applying it at work.

A numbered completion certificate suitable for framing documents successful completion of the program.

Since 1998, Seattle Consulting Group has advised, trained, or supported more than 500,000 professionals and frontline employees in 51 countries.

Ninety-two percent of earlier participants reported increased confidence after completing the program.

The training is led by Jim Woods, principal of Seattle Consulting Group, drawing on decades of experience advising and training managers on difficult people decisions.
