Managing a Struggling Employee

$249.00
Date & Time:

When an employee is struggling, the difficult part is often deciding what is actually wrong—and what to do next.

Is the issue unclear expectations, capability, workplace conditions, conflict, conduct, willingness, or role fit? Should the manager coach, provide additional support, begin formal improvement, escalate the matter, or take another course of action?

Managing a Struggling Employee is a practical two-hour seminar led by Jim Woods, Managing Partner of Seattle Consulting Group Canada, author of HR Unchained, former university professor, and organizational development and Human Resources professional whose work has reached more than 500,000 professionals and frontline employees across 51 countries.

In one focused live session, participants learn how to diagnose the problem, choose an appropriate response, prepare the next conversation, and establish clear follow-through.

CA$249 includes live instruction, four practical decision tools, applied case learning, a completion certificate, and a full-refund guarantee.

How the Seminar Helps

Performance problems are rarely solved by simply telling someone to improve. Managers first need to understand what is driving the problem, what responsibility belongs to the employee, what support may be appropriate, and what response the situation requires.

During the seminar, you will work through a practical way to make those decisions before the situation becomes more difficult. The emphasis is not on scripts or formulas. It is on helping you think clearly about the problem in front of you and choose a response you can explain, support, and follow through on.

What You Will Learn

You will learn how to separate the visible performance issue from its possible causes and determine whether the problem involves expectations, capability, workplace conditions, conflict, conduct, willingness, or role fit.

From there, you will examine how to choose among coaching, additional support, formal performance improvement, discipline, escalation, or another appropriate course of action.

The seminar also addresses the conversation itself: what needs to be clear before you meet with the employee, how to communicate the concern without unnecessary ambiguity, and how to establish expectations for what happens next.

Seminar Agenda

The seminar follows the management decision in the same order it usually unfolds at work:

  • Understand the performance problem. Identify what is actually affecting performance and separate symptoms from possible causes.

  • Choose the right response. Decide whether the situation calls for coaching, support, formal improvement, discipline, escalation, or another course of action.

  • Prepare the conversation. Clarify the issue, the expectation, the employee’s responsibility, and what needs to happen next.

  • Follow through. Establish accountability, document commitments, and determine the next step if sufficient improvement does not occur.

Practical Tools You Can Use

Participants receive four practical decision tools designed for use beyond the seminar. They help you diagnose the performance problem, prepare for the conversation, choose an appropriate intervention, and establish follow-through.

Applied case work gives you an opportunity to use the tools in realistic management situations rather than simply hearing about them.

The objective is straightforward: when an employee is struggling, you should have a clearer way to determine what is happening and what you should do next.
