The Problem With Inside-Out Leadership

Leadership development often begins by asking leaders to look inward: become more self-aware, clarify their purpose, confront their assumptions, and better understand themselves. Those disciplines matter. But when an organization is underperforming, they may not be the right place to begin.

The more urgent question is what responsibility is not being fulfilled. Poor performance may reflect strategy, structure, capability, incentives, judgment, or a leader’s unwillingness to act. Only after diagnosing the failure can an organization know whether the solution requires changing the system, another person, or the leader.

The problem with inside-out leadership is not introspection. It is treating introspection as the default diagnosis.
